Meet, Slurp, Learn: The International Boston Seafood Show 2012

IBSS 2012 logoMaking your way through the jammed aisles of the International Boston Seafood Show is like trying to swim laps in a hotel pool crowded with kids playing Marco Polo. Seafood buyers, distributors, wholesalers, processors, exporters, brokers and traders are everywhere, meeting with customers, holding workshops, and stopping to slurp an oyster every few feet. Fortunately, if you get stuck in the crowd, you get to grab another tasty little crab cake, a piece of smoked salmon, or lobster salad on a tortilla chip.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to come back to the show to participate in the 2nd Annual iPura Tweet & Blogfest at IBSS 2012. As a blogger and Tweeter who often writes about sustainable seafood, this event is a fabulous opportunity to observe, ask questions, and learn from industry experts.

This year’s show is bigger than ever, with over 1000 exhibitors and 18,000 attendees. Sustainability is the buzz word on everybody’s lips. As I wondered last year, are they really swimming the swim of sustainability, or  just talking the talk?

I call myself a pescovegetarian, because I’m a seafood-eating vegetarian.  I choose to eat seafood because it’s healthy, it’s relatively low on the food chain, and I absolutely adore it.  But as I become more knowledgeable about the dangers of overfishing, loss of biodiversity, disease outbreaks, and pharmaceuticals in fish, I sometimes feel paralyzed at the fish counter about what I should or shouldn’t be buying.

So I’m going to use this trade show as an opportunity to meet, slurp and learn about seafood sustainability, and to share what I find with you, dear reader.  I hope I don’t make you too hungry!
